Pulling Back the Curtain - Jeff

Do you wonder what really takes place in a Tantra session? Here's your chance to find out.

Jeff gazed into my eyes with look of peace laced with awe, his body still, two hours into our Tantric healing session. His skin glistened with massage oil, a reflection of his glistening spirit. I recognized that look on his face, and I knew he was fully open to Divine Love flowing though him, a gateway to a higher consciousness “Shiva,” I said to him. “What advice would you give to this man, Jeff, one You love so much?”

It may seem strange that I would talk to Jeff as if he were a Hindu deity. We westerners strongly identify with being human beings, with God up in the sky, sitting on a cloud, judging our behavior, and talking to us through a clergyman. Yet, I have seen time and again that when we relax into Love, we open the gateway to a personal connection with God, to ecstasy, to healing, to miracles.

Jeff is a software developer in his thirties, married with three children under ten. He’s well-known in his community for being a spiritual leader, and often helps organize local events involving couple’s enrichment, yoga, and personal development. When he came to me he was experiencing deep emotional pain, shame around his sexuality, and doubt about his self-worth. In public, Jeff is confident, knowledgeable and out-spoken; he counsels people who come to him with similar issues, so these private emotional pains confused him.

I reassured Jeff that people in helping positions often have deeply-set pains, but by addressing them instead of pushing them down further, we develop authentic healing tools to share. Jeff agreed; he booked a room in Carbondale, and I met him there on a sunny summer afternoon.

Our session began as they always do: we set up a sacred physical and emotional space with incense, candles, flowers, and a conversation about the boundaries and desires. We set an intention to give and receive only love, and to meet each other as representatives of the Divine Masculine and Divine Feminine that flows through us all. Then, considering the deep healing work he wanted, I invited Jeff to disrobe—a symbol of his raw self, of trust, of the desire for healing to flow deep, of self-acceptance--and lie comfortably on the bed.

There is something powerful, magical even, about the concoction of erotic energy and unconditional love. As I poured love over Jeff’s body and spirit, a dynamic took over no less remarkable for its reliability: Jeff met with the Divine. He spent hours in sacred rendezvous; shame bubbled to the surface only to melt away gently and powerfully in Love.

Jesus was quoted as saying, “I and the Father are One” and that’s what happens in Tantric ceremony for anyone willing to enter that Oneness. When I saw Jeff in the Oneness, I asked Him what advice He would give to His human self. What followed was one of the most breathtaking responses I’ve ever heard:

You do not need anyone’s approval to be who you are. Your only work is shine your light and to love, love, LOVE.

Over the next few days and weeks, I would receive excited texts and emails from Jeff as that sacred energy would continue to unfold with revelations and delights for him. But in that moment, we spent another hour or so curled up together, soaking in that sweet response with soft caresses and knowing looks and smiles, letting it sink deeply into his psyche. Then we closed our ceremony and gently returned to our fully human selves, only this time full of peace and renewal, ready to shine.
